Overwatch 2 Director Says 6v6 Is "Probably Here To Stay"

The most significant change introduced with Overwatch 2 was the shift from 6v6 to 5v5. This proved to be incredibly divisive, with many calling for the old team sizes to return. 6v6 modes were then rolled out on a temporary basis and seem to have been a success, as there are now plans to take this further.

Speaking in a new blog post, Overwatch 2 director Aaron Keller addresses the future of 6v6, saying that it will "probably" become a permanent fixture in the game in some form or another. However, he adds that the team is "not ready" to replace 5v5 with 6v6 just yet, so it will be relegated to secondary game modes.

In the blog post, Keller reflects on the success of the recent 6v6 trials and announces that 6v6 is coming to competitive.

"There’s definitely a demand for a mode with this team size, but it’s still uncertain how large that demand is," he says. "We’re going to run a mini-competitive season of 6v6 starting midseason 15. It’s still a little early to say what 6v6’s place is in Overwatch...
