While Mortal Kombat 1 was just released in September 2023, and more DLC is on the way, it looks like NetherRealm Studios is already preparing for its next project.
This was revealed by studio boss Ed Boon during an interview, where he confirmed that even during the development of Mortal Kombat 1, they already knew what they wanted to do next.
NetherRealm Is Sowing Seeds For Their Current Project
Speaking in The Fourth Curtain podcast (via Eventhubs), Boon talks about NetherRealm Studios' process in crafting their future projects. "It's not like when we finish a game, we go 'What are we going to do next?' we decided what we were going to do a long time ago," Boom explains.
Continuing with the topic, Boon states, "The next game hasn't been announced, I'd love to give you that exclusive, but I'd probably get in big trouble." Adding to that, "We're supporting Mortal Kombat 1 with additional characters and what not, and we're planting seeds for the next game," Boon notes.
Logic would point to the studio's game as the next Mortal Kombat entry, wich would be called Mortal Kombat 2? Mortal Kombat 1 - 2? I honestly do not know given...
