The creator of Super Smash Bros. has commented on the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct, prompting excitement that a new entry in the series will be announced during the show.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate launched in 2018, though fans would receive new content over the next few years, with the two Fighter Passes adding huge names like Sephiroth and Sora to the game.

Once work was done on the game, Smash Bros. creator Masahiro Sakurai spent several years working on his YouTube channel, discussing game development and sharing anecdotes about his time in the industry. The channel ended its run in 2024.

Nintendo has confirmed the times for the April 2025 Nintendo Switch 2 Direct. Masahiro Sakurai commented on the announcement on Twitter/X, saying “Wow” in Japanese, leading to fans bombarding him with messages about a new game.

Is Sakurai Hinting At Super Smash Bros. On Nintendo Switch 2?

There are four possible reasons for Sakurai’s tweet. The first is that it’s nothing: he’s worked with closely with Nintendo for years and is excited to learn about the new system. The second is that he has a game project that will be announced, but it’s not Smash Bros. related.
