A TV series based off of The Last of Us is currently in the works.
On Twitter, HBO announced that a TV adaptation of The Last of Us is in production. The project is being led by Craig Mazin, who is known for his work in the critically acclaimed HBO series Chernobyl. Naughty Dog vice president Neil Druckmann, who wrote and co-directed The Last of Us, will write and executive produce the show. Naughty Dog president Evan Wells will also serve as an executive producer, as well as veteran HBO producer Carolyn Strauss. The HBO tweet states that the show is "coming soon," and shows off the symbol of the Fireflies, a militia group from the game.
"Neil Druckmann is without question the finest storyteller working in the video game medium, and The Last of Us is his magnum opus," Mazin stated to The Hollywood Reporter. "Getting a chance to adapt this breathtaking work of art has been a dream of mine for years, and I'm so honored to do it in partnership with Neil."
"From the first time I sat down to talk with Craig I was equally blown away by his approach to narrative and his love and deep understanding of The Last of Us," Druckmann told The Hollywood Reporter. "With Chernobyl, Craig and HBO created a tense, harrowing, emotional masterpiece. I couldn't think of better partners to bring the story of The Last of Us to life as a television show."
While Mazin and Druckmann aim to cover the events of the first game in the TV series, The Hollywood Reporter did state that there is the possibility of extra content based upon the title's sequel.
The Last of Us originally released in 2013 for the PlayStation 3. The game was released on the PlayStation 4 the next year. More than 17 million copies of the game have been sold across both platforms. The second game in the series, The Last of Us Part 2, will release exclusively on the PlayStation 4 on May 29th.
