Cross-Play Shooter Rogue Company Reveals Gameplay

Cross-Play Shooter Rogue Company Reveals Gameplay

on | OpenCritic

Hi-Rez Studios, the creators of games like Smite, Paladins, and Realm Royale, are prepping for their next multiplayer game, Rogue Company, and have today revealed a first look at gameplay.

The game was first revealed at last September's Nintendo Direct and will feature both cross-play and cross-progression spanning Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, PS4, and PC where it will launch as an Epic Games Store exclusive. You can catch the first ever public look at gameplay with today's new trailer.

Two game modes have been revealed thus far, a 2v2 mode called Wingman and a 4v4 mode called Extraction. With their past projects, Hi-Rez has chased some of gaming's most popular trends. Smite is a MOBA which came after League of Legends and Dota2, Paladins is a hero shooter that followed Overwatch, and Realm Royale is a cartoonish battle royale that followed in Fortnite's footsteps.

Rogue Company, however, seems to be interested in carving out its own path, even as it's not without influences. Players wingsuit into a map and battle over different objectives using hero-like characters. It's something of an amalgam of some of competitive shooters' most popular mechanics, all packed in a colorful palette meant to age better than photorealistic graphics which can quickly look dated. It has the potential to be Hi-Rez's biggest release yet, and hopefully will help usher in a new era of cross-progression games.

Other games from Hi-Rez have earned "Strong" reviews on OpenCritic, like Smite's 81 average and Paladins' 79 average. This summer, when Rogue Company launches simultaneously across all platforms, we'll find out how Rogue Company stacks up with the growing cabinet of Hi-Rez PvP games.
