Avowed shares a few similarities with other action RPGs, and one of them is that you're much, much better off playing it in first-person. While Obsidian does let you switch to third-person, it makes combat an absolute faff, so it's not really worth the bonus of being able to stare at the character you spent all that time making.

Now, fans might have a fix for this problem. By just changing the camera distance, third-person mode can be a whole lot better in combat, helping you to focus on multiple enemies at once. And if you're struggling to find the right camera settings yourself, there's already a mod for that, aiming to improve the third-person experience.

This mod from Nexus user Caites keeps the camera much closer in combat, making it so you can only see the upper half of your character. As you can see in the screenshots, this means you're not pulled away from the enemies as you are in the vanilla third-person, and can get a better look at what they're doing.
