Far Cry Extraction-Based Multiplayer Spin-Off Reportedly Rebooted

Ubisoft has reportedly rebooted a Far Cry extraction-based multiplayer shooter codenamed "Maverick".

Insider Gaming reports that the project began as a multiplayer component for Far Cry 7 before Ubisoft Montreal decided that it would better serve as a standalone spin-off. It's unclear why Maverick has now been rebooted, but several sources allegedly familiar with the game's development claim that the "writing was on the wall" for months. Reportedly, the project's dedicated tech team, Talisker, was moved from Maverick to work on Blackbird, ie Far Cry 7, in December, which Insider Gaming describes as the "final nail in the coffin".

Ubisoft cancelled a similar project last year, The Division Heartland.

Ubisoft Montreal — who is in charge of both projects — will reportedly return Maverick to the prototype phase with help from Ubisoft Sherbrooke and Berlin. Insider Gaming claims that, amidst the reboot, a dozen developers have been moved to work on Blackbird, while another dozen have been sent elsewhere, leaving around 50 developers without an assigned project.
