Evo 2020 is no longer taking place this summer.

On Twitter, it was announced that Evo 2020 will no longer be taking place this July. According to the tweet, the tournament was cancelled due to the spread of COVID-19. It was revealed that there will be some sort of online event for the tournament this summer, though details were not given.

"Due to COVID-19, we are sadly cancelling Evo 2020 at Mandalay Bay and refunding all purchased tickets," the tweet stated. "But to keep the Evo spirit alive, we're bringing the event online this summer. More information coming soon! The health and well-being of our community is our highest priority. We hope everyone stays safe during this time."

A second tweet revealed that all arena and hotel room reservations will be refunded automatically with no need to call in. There will be a form up next week for tournament registration cancellation options.

Evo takes place every summer in Las Vegas. This year it was planned to take place from Jul 31st to August 2nd. Evo is one of the biggest fighting game events to take place every year, featuring some of the most popular fighters and largest crowds every year. This year's nine game lineup up featured Street Fighter V: Championship Edition, Dragon Ball FighterZ, Granblue Fantasy Versus, and Marvel VS Capcom 2: Tournament of Champions. Surprisingly, Mortal Kombat 11 and BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle did not make the roster of titles.

The Evo online was not the only online event to be announced recently. Geoff Keighley, the producer of E3 and The Game Awards, has announced the Summer Game Fest. The event will start in May, and last through August, filling in the gaps of cancelled that were supposed to take place this summer, such E3 and Gamescom. There will be in-game events, previews of upsoming games, and more according to Keighley. It has been revealed that a large number of companies, such as Activision, EA, and Square Enix will participate throughout the festival.

More information on when the online Evo event will take place and in what capacity should be coming soon.
