Codemasters, the storied studio famous for racing games, is apparently working on a new game in the Dirt series, and perhaps even more than one.
With the final update coming to Dirt Rally 2.0, it seems Codies, as the studio's fans call it, is teasing new projects, at least one of which seems to be some kind of sequel, or perhaps a spinoff, to the already branching Dirt series.
Prepare to see something new roar to life in the world of Dirt, very soon," said a blog post on the studio website. "Developed by a separate Codemasters studio to the Dirt Rally team, we’re incredibly excited about what’s around the corner. We invite you to be part of a brand new experience, while also continuing to enjoy our definitive Rally offering."
While the studio is deliberately vague, it sounds a lot like some kind of offshoot to the main series is on the way, but that it may accompany another more traditional sequel too, as the blog post continued.
"As for the future of Dirt Rally? Well… we have a few things in mind. We have big plans, driven by a passionate development team, solely tasked with taking the Rally series to even greater heights. You won’t hear about that for a while, but when you do... oh boy, will you be excited for what’s coming. Whether it’s our latest game soon to be revealed, or what comes next for Rally, we are incredibly excited to continue making Dirt the franchise for everything we all love about off-road racing"
That language all but confirms there are two games in the works, with one of them, the spinoff, coming first and being revealed soon. Might we even see it at Microsoft's Inside Xbox stream this Thursday? That show is set to feature a number of third-party games for the next generation of Xbox consoles, Xbox Series X. We'll find out this Thursday, May 7, at 8 am Pacific, but if it's not there, it will likely turn up during another of the Summer Games Fest showcases.
