The Last of Us is coming to HBO, and now we know which director will be bringing the debut episode to life.

As the show is co-created by Naughty Dog's Neil Druckmann and Chernobyl's Craig Mazin, the HBO veteran from the recent historical drama has sought one of his old co-workers to work on The Last of Us. Johan Renck, the director of all five episodes of Chernobyl - and who won an Emmy for doing so - will be at the helm for "at least" the pilot, Renck recently revealed in an interview with Discussing Film.

For years, talks of a The Last of Us movie were ongoing, but the monumental PlayStation franchise will now become a series on HBO. The series won't go into production until The Last of Us Part 2 launches on June 19, and even then the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic will likely disrupt its schedule anyway.

The series has not yet revealed who will play its starring roles, Joel and Ellie, but Mazin and Druckmann have hinted that the series will follow the video game story at least somewhat closely, saying that they will keep Ellie's sexuality a part of her character in the show. Fans have spent the last few months fan-casting the roles with popular casting assignments going to Hugh Jackman for Joel and Sophia Lillis as Ellie.

As for the game's major sequel, we're now just a few days out from the first reviews hitting the internet for The Last of Us Part 2. You can guess the score at the game's homepage, then come back on June 12 and see how it stacks up to your expectations as dozens of reviews will begin to pour in.
