As someone who grew up playing Oblivion, the transition to Skyrim was strange in some ways. Skyrim is by far the most commercially successful game in the series, so lots of players who have only played the latest mainline Elder Scrolls game won't have experienced this inertia.

However, players currently experiencing the joys of Cyrodiil in Oblivion Remastered may have observed this inertia in reverse. In many ways, Skyrim is the more intuitive game. The original Oblivion has a nonsensical loot system and an obtuse levelling system that requires you to grind skills you don't intend to use to empower the skills you do. Oblivion Remastered fortunately addresses the latter, but you still need mods to fix the former.

However, one thing that Oblivion (and Morrowind) categorically do better than Skyrim is the magic system. In Oblivion, unlike Skyrim, you can cast magic while having weapons equipped. This means that just like every Skyrim character becomes a stealth archer, every Oblivion character becomes a battlemage. There's zero reason not to summon a not-so-friendly Dremora to assist me in my battle against Mehrunes Dagon. Their hellish flames and my massive warhammer combine in a crescendo of violence.
