Classic SEGA Franchise Getting Remaster Treatment Along With Possible New Sequel Game

One of Sega’s long-dormant franchises is being revived in the modern era, as Ecco the Dolphin is finally returning with remasters and a third entry that continues the events of the original story.

Ecco the Dolphin is one of the strangest games of the 16-bit era. The player takes on the role of the titular sea animal, who must protect the planet from aliens. The Ecco series is notable for some brutally difficult entries, even when compared to some of the harder games on the SNES and Sega Genesis.

There hasn’t been a new Ecco game released since the year 2000, but that’s about to change. In an interview on Xbox Wire (as spotted by Gematsu), series creator Ed Anunziata has revealed the first two Ecco the Dolphin games are being remastered, with a third one on the way, and he's on board for the project. All will be shown on April 25, 2026 at the new Ecco the Dolphin website.
