Larian Studios Stands With Game Modders, Opposes “Stupid” Laws

IP law is such a great thing, isn't it? Designed to protect the works of the Little Guy against big corporations stealing their ideas, its main role in modern society seems to be making livestreamers freak out every time someone plays music within earshot. Among other things.

One of those 'other things' are game mods - and based on a recent interview, it's something that Larian Studios is especially fond of. Swen Vincke, Larian's CEO, has gone on record saying that game studios should really change their tune when it comes to fanmade mods.

“It’s really cool, right?” He says in an interview with GameSpot. I mean, like, it’s passion, it’s word of mouth from a marketing point-of-view."

Vincke brought up several examples of fanmade projects getting recognition from developers in a cool way, and asserts that such actions send a much stronger, positive message to fans. Rather than cracking down on fan creativity, studios should fuel their passion as much as possible.

The first example was a fairly recent one - with the release of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, Bethesda sent a little gift to the developers of the Skyblivion project.
