An interview with the developers of the upcoming Mario Kart World has revealed that the game nearly broke one of the series’ longest-running conventions, one that would likely have raised eyebrows if it had come to pass.

The Nintendo Switch has access to nearly every Mario Kart game, thanks to retro titles on Nintendo Switch Online. The only ones missing are Mario Kart: Double Dash!! and the arcade games, with the former likely to appear as part of the GameCube roster on Nintendo Switch 2.

Retro titles aside, Nintendo has only released a single Mario Kart game per console, starting with the SNES. An interview with the people behind Mario Kart World on the official Nintendo website has confirmed that this pattern was nearly broken, as the game was originally planned to launch on the Nintendo Switch.
