The Prince of Persia is coming back.
A remake of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is on the way (a trailer can be seen here). The game will release in January, 2021 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. Rather than a remaster, this version of The Sands of Time will be a full remake with upgraded visuals, as well as improvements in combat and the camera. The controls have also been modernized, though players do have the option to choose the original controls. The game will retail for $39.99 when it releases. Those who pre-order the game will receive the Back to the Origins set. This set includes an Original Weapons Set, the Prince's original outfit, and a Classic Filter.
The original Prince of Persia: The Sands of Times released back in 2003. The series was created by Jordan Mechner. While Mechner did not assist in the upcoming remake, he was kept in the loop of The Sands of Time's development. He stated that he played the game, and that it gave him tingles, as he was able to fluidly navigate a world that is lush, sensual, and immersive in ways that he could only have dreamed of in 2003. He also stated that the game's development team updated the experience without contradicting player's memories.
"The remake team aimed to update the experience to meet modern gamers' expectations, but without bending it so far as to contradict our memories," Mechner stated. "To my taste, they've hit the target. Although rebuilt from the ground up with new assets and engine, the story, gameplay, level design, and dialog are faithful to the original."
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time will release on January 21st 2021. The game will launch for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. According to the game's page on the Ubisoft Store, those who purchase the game on the PlayStation 4 or Xbox One will be able to upgrade to the next-gen version for free.
