It's not been a fantastic start to Civilization 7's life cycle. With Civ 7, Firaxis set out to change the series' formula, not a foolhardy goal in and of itself. Unfortunately, these sweeping changes inadvertently alienated a large chunk of the player base, who disapprove of Civ 7's new direction.

This has resulted in a wave of negative reception for the latest instalment in the legendary series. Civilization 7 currently sits at "Mostly Negative" recent reviews on Steam, and "Mixed" reviews overall. However, though this release has been particularly poorly received, a 'slow start' is nothing new for the series.

A lot of players weren't particularly fond of Civilization 6 at release, but various updates and expansions have now made it one of the most well-regarded entries in the series, and currently the most popular.

Will we see a repeat of this cycle for Civilization 7? A few fans certainly seem to think so, as a Reddit thread by BrennanBetelgeuse expresses that Firaxis' recent update post has "inspired hope" regarding the game's future.
