Without a doubt, that original trailer for Dead Island 2, released in 2014, is one of the most notorious game trailers of all time, as despite how amazing it looked, the game it was advertising was having a bit of trouble under the hood, finally releasing about 10 years after the trailer’s debut.
Even though Dead Island 2 was eventually released in a pretty good state, it’s one of those few games that was trapped in such a perpetual state of development hell, it was clear the entire project had to be scrapped at least once or twice.
In a development talk shared by gamesindustry.biz, an audience member had a question about this rocky development for Martin Wein, the previous head of communications for Deep Silver, who published Dead Island 2.
According to his testimony about the build of the game being developed around the time of that now infamous 2014 trailer, behind closed doors, things were going as fans have always expected. Essentially, at that time, Wein explains that all they had going for them was that flashy trailer and a pretty “sh*t game.”
