Capcom Admits Monster Hunter Wilds “Fell Short Of Our Expectations”

Monster Hunter Wilds has had a perilous fight to win players' hearts and Capcom's pocketbooks in the months after its release this past February, but while we've known since launch that many of the series' fans have disliked the game, we're now learning that even in its first quarter, Wilds' sales disappointed its publisher.

The immediate launch phase saw ten million copies sold, which is probably pretty great. But it fell apart so quickly. The "legs" - which is to say, longer-term sales - have been rough. Still, some of us are surprised that they were so rough as to make that very first sales window an outright disappointment for Capcom. Let's dig in.

The news comes from Capcom's Q1 FY2025 financial results conference call, which is arguably as official as one can possibly get. These are the moments when investors get to grill companies for their quarterly performance. The companies, in turn, frequently attempt to put a right-proper spin on negative-slant queries, but they'll be in hot water if they outright fib. The numbers, after all, are plain as day in the prepared slides.
