Roblox Officially Adds New 18+ Age Restrictions Following Child Safety Backlash

New age restrictions are cropping up everywhere these days, and controversial game platform Roblox is now making a change of its own. Roblox has been dealing with extensive backlash surrounding child safety concerns, ranging from a lawsuit by the Louisiana Attorney General to a popular petition calling for the CEO's removal. Many stated concerns arguably remain unaddressed, but tweaks to Roblox's age restrictions are a start.

In a staff post on its developer forum, Roblox announced that the age threshold for Restricted content will be raised from 17+ to 18+. While this change will happen later this year, search results and recommendations with the Restricted label are immediately being removed for users under 18.

Creators of Restricted experiences who are currently under 18 will still have access to their own works, but it will no longer be possible to make Restricted games while under 18 in the future.

Roblox's Restricted category isn't intended to be a blanket pass for any form of inappropriate content. The forum post stresses that sexual content is still unilaterally prohibited, even with the increase from a 17+ to 18+ age threshold.
