The popular gaming platform, Roblox, has been under immense pressure lately over its failures to properly address child safety issues. Recent changes to age-restricted content have been announced, but Roblox appears to be taking even further steps according to a recent statement from developers.
According to an official statement on the Roblox website, the platform is launching an "ambitious plan to expand age estimation to all Roblox users who access our on-platform communication features by the end of this year."
The technology will combine facial recognition technology, ID verification, and verified parental consent to get a more accurate idea of each user's age, and will extend to the chat features as well. The age estimation and verification process will apply to all users on the platform.
Last weekend, Roblox announced an age limit increase on viewing restricted content from 17+ to 18+, which was certainly a step in the right direction, but still seemed like a half-measure given the scale of child safety concerns being raised. Today's announcement, on the other hand, is more of a full-fledged campaign to eradicate child predation entirely from the platform.
