Sonic Team boss Takashi Iizuka has said that he wants to give other side characters the Year of Shadow treatment, especially those who appear in the live-action movies.
Sonic fans may have been on a bit of a rollercoaster over the past decade, but the last few years have been incredibly strong for the series. Not only did we get Sonic Frontiers, which I'd argue is the perfect benchmark for Sonic's future, but we also got Sonic X Shadow Generations, which finally put Shadow back in the spotlight after far too long.
It was pretty obvious when Shadow Generations was revealed that this was being done to tie into his appearance in Sonic 3, which was confirmed to be true when The Year of Shadow was announced. That year seems to have done wonders for Sonic Team, as they're interested in doing it again for more characters beyond the Blur Blur himself.
