So far in 2025, Steam has released 15,274 games, an impressive number but still shy of breaking their record of 18,604, which was set in 2024.
While Steam offers many of the most popular titles, a large chunk of their yearly releases come in the form of passion projects from individual developers or small teams, and you might be surprised to hear that an estimated 40% of all games released on Steam this year haven't even recouped their $100 release cost.
This estimation comes via Gamalytic, which uses an algorithm to estimate Steam game sales and revenue, so take these numbers with a grain of salt as there are a lot of variables that may be unaccounted for.
With that being said, Artur Smiarowski, the creator of turn-based roguelike RPG Soulash, recently shared his thoughts regarding this year's Steam sales, suggesting indie games may not be profiting as much as they were in 2024.
Estimates Say 65.9% Of Steam Releases In 2025 Earned Less Than $1,000
The chart Smiarowski shared estimates Steam's total revenue for 2025 at 4.7 billion, with the bottom 30% of games averaging just $37 in revenue, and the top 5% averaging over $300k.
