The recently released Painkiller reboot is off to a pretty rough start on Steam, as it's currently sitting with Mixed reviews that mostly focus on how "generic" it is.
People Can Fly's original Painkiller is considered a cult classic in the FPS space thanks to its Serious Sam-style shooting mechanics, rock and roll tone, and laser-sharp focus on what makes a boomer shooter fun in the first place. It's been more than 20 years since that Painkiller released, and plenty of us have hoped to see the series return in that time.
That wish was granted earlier this year when it was announced that Anshar Studios and 3D Realms were teaming up to release a reboot that reinvented the series by focusing on co-op. That raised some eyebrows at the time, and it seems those reactions were pretty justified, judging by the game's Steam reviews at launch.
