The PlayStation 5's first major update will be adding new storage options among other things.

On the PlayStation Blog, Sony gave details on what PlayStation 5 owners should expect when the system's first big update drops. One of the main features that this update will add is the ability to store games on USB extended storage. Gamers will be able to copy games onto extended storage, and will be able to seamlessly copy those games back to the console's internal storage. It will be faster to reinstall games from USB extended storage than to re-download or copy them from a disc. Titles will not be playable from USB extended storage as PlayStation 5 games are designed to take advantage of the system's high-speed SSD. However, games that are copied back to the console's internal storage will automatically update when applicable.

The PlayStation 5's big update will also be adding new social features. PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 owners will be able to Share Play together while chatting in parties. This will allow PlayStation 5 users to let their friends on a PlayStation 4 view their game screen, as well as try out the PlayStation 5 games through Share Play, and vice versa. It was also revealed that a selection of joinable game sessions will now appear on both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 consoles, allowing more gameplay opportunities. The "Request to Join" option will also serve as a shortcut to sending friends a game invite, reducing the time it takes to join games with friends.

The PlayStation 5 update will add enhanced control and personalization options. The Game Base menu is being improved for faster access to important content and features. Gamers will now be able to easily switch between Parties and Friends to start chatting with their existing parties, as well as see what their online friends are up to. Gamers will be able to quickly disable in-game chat, as well as adjust the individual voice chat volume in the same chat. Once its enabled by developers, updates for games will pre-download if the "automatic updates" setting is enabled and the console is in on or in rest mode. Players will have the ability to search their library or hide games from view, allowing the to find content easier and personalize the view of their game library. They will also now be able to adjust the magnification of their screen. Finally, the level of trophies that result in automatic capture of a screenshot or video clip can be customized. There will also be a new Trophy Stats screen.

The PlayStation 5's major update will release on April 14th.
