The automation genre has come a long way since SpaceChem, dividing itself up into several sub-genres that approach the desire to make a giant complicated machine out of simple parts in any number of ways. Third-person automation is still the most common, viewing the layout from an overhead perspective, but there are still a small number of notable first-person games out there. Some have pressure mechanics to keep you moving, while others are all about taking it at your own pace with no danger. The machines that process one item into another may have a resource cost, or maybe not depending on the game's needs. There are a lot of different ways to automate the world, and the new Modulus demo shows a game where every part of the design bends towards a chilled, stress-free experience.
