The Game Awards is probably fully aware that no matter how good of a show it puts on, it's almost always defined by its closer. Over the years, we've seen some pretty incredible "one more thing" moments during the show, giving us announcements like Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, Monster Hunter Wilds, and Final Fantasy 16, but this year's final world premiere definitely fell a bit flat.
Instead of ending The Game Awards on a high note, such as the reveal of a massive surprise like Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic, Mega Man: Dual Overdrive, or Larian's next game — Divinity — Geoff Keighley decided to give the spotlight to a brand-new game from a brand-new studio made up of former Apex Legends and Titanfall developers. This game was Highguard.
While it looked pretty cool in its own way, it didn't exactly have the wow factor that an established name would have given the moment. It also didn't help that a lot of people initially thought it could have been an update on The Elder Scrolls 6, thanks to some very familiar mountains that appeared on stage as Geoff was announcing the game.
