Pokemon Sun And Moon's Ultra Beasts Were Actually Rejected Pokemon Designs

Pokémon Sun and Moon are now a decade old; the series' seventh generation brought us some of the strangest designs in Pokémon history - the Ultra Beasts.

These 'extradimensional' Pokémon have travelled through Ultra Space, which explains some of their uncanny design choices. Game Freak senior developer Shigeru Ohmori previously revealed that Ultra Beasts were based on the concept of invasive species, while art director Ken Sugimori asserted that the design of the Ultra Beasts is intentionally contradictory to make them stand out from regular Pokémon.

Now, former Game Freak designer Yusuke Omura has confirmed another popular fan theory — Ultra Beasts aren't supposed to look like Pokémon at all, i.e. they intentionally look out of place in Sun and Moon. In a post on X, Omura elaborated on how the Ultra Beasts were created.

"I designed the Ultra Beasts by recalling some of the designs I made, which were rejected by Mr Sugimori, and I decided to deliberately use the very reasons for why they were rejected and base the artistic direction of the designs on them.
