Mojang's Scrolls is revived as free to play Caller's Bane

on | OpenCritic

If it made you sad when Mojang announced that its digital card game, Scrolls, was being shut down, we have great news for you today proving that dead isn't always gone forever. Scrolls has been reborn as a free-to-play PC game called Caller's Bane.

It's time! We're releasing the game for free, for anyone to enjoy. The team's been working towards this behind the scenes for a long time now. I'm thrilled we're finally here! To those of you who've waited patiently for this, thanks. You're the best. <3

Players can download Caller's Bane from the official site right now. Later, dedicated servers will be enabled that will allow players to host community-run servers. Mojang is promising to publish instructions on how exactly to do that in the near future.

You can check out the full post on the Caller's Bane site and get started playing today!

A few notes from Mojang as seen on our Facebook page:

  • It's not "F2P" as such, although it's "Free to Play". F2P moniker carries with it a bit of a stigma as often including in game transactions. We're releasing the game free to the public. It's not a relaunch with some new monetization. It's being released to the public :)
  • It's not really being run by Mojang. We're releasing the clients and servers to the public to start their own servers so that the game can live on through the community. There is no further development planned on Mojangs part, although the community can do a lot of modifications.
