Sony Reveals $766m Bungie Writedown in Latest Financial Results | TechRaptor

Sony has released its financial results for the 2025 fiscal year, and the publisher has reported a pretty big write-down on the part of Marathon and Destiny developer Bungie.

As revealed in Sony's latest financial report, the Japanese gaming giant recorded "impairment losses" to the tune of about 120 billion yen on Bungie's part. That works out at around $766 million, so it's not an insignificant loss.

The loss is perhaps a little worrying given that Sony's financial year ends on March 31st, which means that it takes into account the release of extraction shooter Marathon. Admittedly, the game belongs to a niche genre that was probably never going to carry Sony's live-service ambitions single-handedly, but this will almost certainly be making executives nervous.

Despite the loss suffered as a result of Bungie in 2025, Sony says it intends to continue supporting Marathon by "working to retain highly engaged core users". The publisher believes that Marathon's "engagement metrics such as retention...remain at a high level".
