PlayStation is officially entering a new era of game preservation, thanks to new efforts by Sony. Xbox has always led the pack when it comes to consumer-facing game preservation. Now, though, Sony is making moves towards a more complete program of game preservation. Fans say it's not perfect or comprehensive just yet, but it's a step in the right direction when it comes to keeping PlayStation classics alive.
According to a PlayStation senior build engineer, Garrett Fredley, posting on BlueSky, PlayStation has begun work on an IP preservation program, with Fredley and his team presenting their vision to the company in a meeting yesterday. Fredley earlier spoke to a collective of devs at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) in March, discussing how his team has been archiving and preserving classic PlayStation games on servers across the globe.
