Quantic Dream has become the latest company to cut its losses chasing the great white whale of live service games, announcing today that they are winding down their latest release Spellcasters Chronicles.
Released in February, Spellcasters Chronicles is (for a few more weeks) a 3v3 MOBA style online game in early access. A radical departure from Quantic Dream's historic focus on narrative storyteller games, the title appeared after they were purchased by NetEase in 2025 as part of a plan to be a 'multi-game' studio per studio head David Cage.
Spellcasters Chronicles never managed to attract much of an audience, with its peak player count on Steam never reaching 1000 players despite being free to play. In their announcement Quantic Dream says,
However, in today's particularly challenging market environment, the game has not reached the audience needed to ensure its long-term sustainability. We have therefore made the difficult decision to refocus our efforts on our other projects.
Their announcement goes on to stay that there will be an 'internal reorganization' and will prioritize internal reassignments wherever possible, but it sounds like layoffs are likely to fall on some of the people working on Spellcasters Chronicles.
