In recent years, Batman adaptations have taken on a noticeably darker style, moving well beyond traditional superhero storytelling to explore Gotham City's criminal underbelly and corruption in more realistic ways. Matt Reeves’ The Batman, for example, introduced a younger, even more brooding Bruce Wayne, leaning heavily into noir influences and detective elements rather than large-scale comic book spectacle.

That tone continued with projects like HBO's The Penguin, which delved deeper into Gotham’s criminal underworld and focused on mob power struggles in the aftermath of the film. Animation has also embraced this more sinister direction, with Batman: Caped Crusader reviving the gothic atmosphere and mature storytelling style associated with classic Batman animation, while simultaneously modernizing its themes for contemporary audiences.

But perhaps one of the darkest and most hardcore Batman iterations we're likely to see to date is officially set to launch in May 2027, taking The Dark Knight into the world of the beloved Berserk anime universe with the exciting upcoming release of Batman: The Berserker Rage Mode (via YouTube).
