The physical release of Gothic 1 Remake is launching with a big catch: it will not be playable out of the box. Fans who pre-ordered a boxed copy of the game will instead need to download a substantial day-one patch before their Gothic 1 Remake adventure can begin.
Originally released in 2001, Gothic is a classic Western RPG with a cult following owing to its harsh fantasy setting, rewarding open-world exploration, meaningful quest choices, and highly immersive progression systems. Developed by the now-defunct Essen-based studio Piranha Bytes, the game had a staggered rollout spanning the better part of 2001, debuting in Europe in March before reaching North America in October. Embracer Group subsidiary THQ Nordic officially greenlit a Gothic remake in early 2020, assigning the project to Alkimia Interactive, a Spanish studio established specifically for that purpose.
