Set in the not-so-distant future, in a city that is corrupt as much as it is beautiful, Cyberpunk 2077 offered players a living, breathing world when it launched back in 2020 and, as a result, it has cemented itself as one of the most influential video games of all time. Going on to inspire graphic novel collections, crossover events, and even arcade games, there is one Cyberpunk 2077-inspired project that has been more influential than most: Cyberpunk Edgerunners.
Airing back in 2022, the Netflix anime show takes place in the Cyberpunk 2077 universe, yet serves as a prequel to the events of the game. Produced by Japanese animation studio Trigger, Cyberpunk Edgerunners follows the story of David Martinez, a street kid who soon finds himself embroiled in Night City's gritty underworld as he battles with the rise of cybernetic enhancements, new friends, and terrifying enemies.
Praised for its writing, characters, animation, music, and worldbuilding, Cyberpunk Edgerunners was soon greenlit for a second season back in 2025, and it is that standalone sequel that is the subject of a recent announcement.
