Sonic Superstars was a disappointment for Sega, both critically and commercially. The game was the first new 2D entry in the series since 2017's Sonic Mania, and many fans clearly preferred the latter. At this point, Sega's plans for future 2D Sonic games are a mystery, and there are lots of questions about how the publisher will handle them. Many fans prefer the pixel art style seen in classic Sonic games, but Sega seems intent on using the kind of 3D character models that appeared in Sonic Superstars.
