You Weren't Hearing Things, That Really Is Hughie From The Boys In God Of War Laufey

PlayStation pulled the rather bold move of closing Tuesday's State of Play by showcasing 20 minutes of unbroken gameplay from the next game in the God of War series, God of War Laufey. The game will feature a gelatinous cube that fights alongside Faye, and if that cube's voice sounds familiar to you, this might explain why.

The big green cube with a sword sticking out of it is voiced by Jack Quaid, best known for playing the role of Hughie in The Boys. Actually, the cube - which is called Phranque, by the way - isn't just voiced by Quaid, it's played by him. Behind-the-scenes shots of motion capture for Laufey show Quaid in full mocap gear, complete with a frame around his middle to represent his cubic form in-game.

It's always equal parts fascinating, amusing, and impressive when you see actors performing mocap for video games. Everyone dressed all in black in a warehouse tends to look ridiculous, but then when you see how that footage translates in-game, it's pretty amazing. Quaid's Phranque kicks all those feelings up a notch thanks to the sandwich board adjacent get-up he had to wear throughout the process....
