A 2022 Game Is Seeing A Surge In Players Thanks To A24’s Backrooms

Backrooms is the latest movie to come from esteemed distributor A24. It follows a furniture store owner who discovers a hidden doorway leading him to "an endless stretch of rooms." It's then up to his therapist to save him.

The Backrooms concept is rooted deep in internet lore, beginning as a creepypasta 4Chan post before being adapted for YouTube by creator Kane Parsons. This launched a range of spin-offs, including several video games and the A24 movie, which is being directed by Parsons himself.

Having been out for a few days now, the Backrooms movie seems to have reignited interest in the creepypasta, as a pair of games based on it have seen a huge influx of players.

Two Backrooms-centric games have benefited from the release of Parsons' new movie: Escape the Backrooms and Backrooms: Escape Together.

According to SteamDB, just five hours ago, Backrooms: Escape Together, a game first released in 2022, just hit its highest peak concurrent player count ever. Prior to this point, Escape Together peaked at 4,965 players in October 2024. Five hours ago, that number fell 56 players short of 9,000.
