A new Xenoblade Chronicles game was just announced at today's Nintendo Direct. Xenoblade Genesis is coming next year.

The trailer gave us a good look at the cinematics and set up the new story. From what we can glean from the reveal, this will be a prequel to the other mainline entries, since the series has dropped numbered instalments.

Nintendo hasn't shed much more light on the game since the reveal, with the game's trailer simply stating that Xenoblade Genesis is "a new beginning for the series". That backs up the idea that this is a prequel, or perhaps even a soft reboot of some kind.

This is the first new game since Xenoblade Chronicles 3 in 2022. This will also be the first entry launched in the Nintendo Switch 2's lifecycle, and it seems that it will be leaving the original Switch behind, as we only saw the Switch 2 logo in the trailer.

A litany of issues has Xenoblade fans unhappy with X's Switch 2 upgrade.
