There's mounting evidence suggesting that Xbox's decision not to put Gears of War: E-Day was one that was made very recently. That's why comments made by some of the lead developers on the next Gears game claiming there was never a PS5 version are a little confusing.
Eurogamer had the opportunity to ask The Coalition studio director Matt Searcy and brand director Nicole Fawcette a question about E-Day during a Q&A session at Summer Game Fest. Biting the bullet and addressing the PlayStation-sized in the room, the developers were asked about E-Day's Xbox exclusivity and what happened to its, presumably scrapped, PS5 version.
Well, according to Searcy and Fawcette, there never was a PS5 version. "We never talked about it," Searcy replied, with Fawcette adding, "It was never changed", referring to the platform plans for the upcoming Gears game. They then pivoted slightly and spoke of their excitement to be an Xbox exclusive and that it feels like an honor to be a flagship Xbox title in an era where, for the time being, everything else at Xbox other than E-Day and Clockwork Revolution is still multi-platform.
