Fable Took So Long To Develop Because It Uses The Forza Engine, It's Claimed

The new Fable was announced seven years ago at Xbox's 2020 showcase. Now, at the 2026 showcase, we just got our best look at the game yet, but it's not actually going to be ready for a while.

With a release date of February 23, 2027, Fable has been a long time coming - even if you ignore the years before the announcement when the series was on ice. According to a new report from Windows Central, there's a big reason for this, and it's all thanks to the ForzaTech engine.

This is part of a wider report from Windows Central, going into Xbox's ongoing issues with its game releases. Put simply, many of its most recent releases are failing to meet sales targets, even if they also launched on PS5.

Here, reliable Xbox reporter Jez Corden says that Fable has been an "incredibly tough" project, thanks to the decision to build it on ForzaTech. As the name would suggest, that is the engine that Playground Games typically uses for its Forza games, so it wasn't built to handle an open-world fantasy RPG like Fable.
