Mario Just Smashed His Own Record For The World's Most Expensive Video Game By $1 Million

The world record for the most expensive video game ever sold hasn't just been broken, it has been well and truly obliterated. A sealed copy of Super Mario Bros. recently sold at auction for $3 million, breaking the previous record by a whole $1 million.

Referring to it as "the holy grail of video game collecting", Heritage Auctions shared the news that it recently facilitated the sale of what is now the most expensive video game of all time. Awarded a 9.6 grade by PSA, which means it is in almost perfect condition, the $3 million sale breaks the previous $2 million record that was set by a different sealed copy of Super Mario Bros. in 2021.

This new record-breaking copy of the game wasn't even known to exist until a few months ago. It was discovered inside a like-new Control Deck NES bundle. It's from the second production run of the game, created in 1986, evident from the sticker on the packaging that wasn't included with newer copies in the years that followed.
