Ninja Theory’s Closure Was Planned Before Senua Was Even Announced

Xbox is running a serious risk of eroding all the goodwill it has built up over the last couple of months. Following the surprise exits of Phil Spencer and Sarah Bond, Asha Sharma was appointed CEO of Xbox. She spent the months following her appointment pandering to long-time Xbox fans and, for a brief period of time, it truly felt like the company may have been back. It didn't take long for the cracks to show, though.

Last week, she admitted that Xbox "isn't healthy" and a flurry of rumors began to surface surrounding upcoming studio closures and layoffs. These included South of Midnight developer and Peabody Award winner Compulsion Games, Psychonauts creator Double Fine, and Hellblade series devs Ninja Theory, a studio that just over a week ago announced its latest game, Senua.

Senua's announcement was part of the reason that Ninja Theory's potential closure was so shocking: why would you close a studio that has just announced a new game? That may have just become clear, as a new report suggests that Senua's announcement was a play by Microsoft, and that the studio's "sunset or split" was planned long before then.
