Supamonks, the team responsible for Absolum's gorgeous art style, is entering court-ordered liquidation, despite the game being a "major success" for Dotemu.
2025 was an absolutely stacked year for games, but one of my absolute favourites of the bunch was the wonderful Absolum, which I praised as being one of the best beat 'em ups in some time that actually pushed the genre further. One of the most standout things about Absolum was its gorgeous art style, which effortlessly evoked dark fantasy and Saturday morning cartoon vibes.
Absolum's development was uniquely handled by three separate teams - Dotemu itself, Guard Crush Games, and Supamonks, who specifically focused on bringing the game's unique art style to life. Sadly, despite Absolum being a massive hit and its art style garnering plenty of praise, it looks like it wasn't enough to save Supamonks from a sudden closure.
