It was only last week that there was controversy over the fact that Grant Theft Auto VI was releasing with only digital code in case but that seems passe in the wake of Sony's bombshell announcement on this Canada Day - starting in January 2028 physical game production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be digital formats only.
This will apply to all new games, not just first party titles, and Sony claims that it is "adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs". For games that release prior to January 2028, this will have no impact - thus the last physical games for PlayStation 5 will likely release in December 2027.
It is possible that we will see boutique publishers and printers of PlayStation 5 discs like we saw in the latter years of the PS Vita, and see with some indie games to this day that are doing smaller print runs. It also means that the PlayStation 6 will almost certainly release without any disc drive.
