As we approach the sixth anniversary of Cyberpunk 2077's release, CD Projekt Red has revealed that, as of today, the game has sold 40 million copies. A milestone the CDPR team likely never dreamed Cyberpunk would hit after one of the rockiest launches in video game history.
"Night City population: 40 million dreamers," the Cyberpunk devs shared on social media. "Thank you all for helping us reach this amazing milestone!" That's copies of the base game sold as well as its Ultimate Edition, which combines the base game and its Phantom Liberty DLC. It doesn't include copies of the expansion that were sold separately.
That 40 million figure alone is impressive enough, but it becomes even more impressive when you realize just how few titles in video game history have managed to hit it. Cyberpunk's 40 million copies sold moves it into the top 20 best-selling games ever. It now shares that spot with Payday 2, Hogwarts Legacy, and the original Sonic the Hedgehog.
