Dragon Age has always been a problem child at both BioWare and Electronic Arts — by all accounts, senior figures at both the studio and the publisher never understood why the high fantasy RPG series has such a dedicated following.
The underperformance of Dragon Age: The Veilguard has cast doubt on the future of the series. The release of Mass Effect Andromeda, Anthem and then The Veilguard has left BioWare in a precarious position, under the ownership of a publisher that's traditionally been eager to close studios.
Dragon Age creator Mark Darrah doesn't believe Dragon Age will ever return, at least not under Electronic Arts. In an interview with FRVR, the veteran developer opened up about EA's relationship with its subsidiaries.
"I think [Veilguard taking so long to be greenlit] was happening because of EA's complicated relationship to shipping games at all," he revealed. "Someone once described EA to me as a 'hedge fund with a video game hobby that it wished it didn't spend so much money on' and I think that remains true."
