One of the biggest breakout sensations of the last few years is Dungeon Crawler Carl. While Matt Dinniman's fantasy series started life as a self-published affair in 2019, it was picked up by Amazon and really started to blow up in 2024. Now, in 2026, Dungeon Crawler Carl is even bigger than ever, and it feels like we're just getting started.

It's easy to see why Dungeon Crawler Carl is so popular. The adventures feel like a traditional role-playing game come to life, set in a world story where Earth has been destroyed by aliens and human survivors are forced into an 18-level underground labyrinth to compete in an intergalactic reality television show. It's basically Hunger Games meets Dungeons & Dragons, so it's no surprise that the books have translated so beautifully into an actual RPG.

Renegade Game Studios has developed a full tabletop adaptation based on the concept of Dungeon Crawler Carl, where one person acts as the game master, controlling the monsters and enemies while other players fight to survive. Of course, any good tabletop RPG requires miniatures, and there's a new set releasing in November 2026 called Allies & Enemies.
