The end of Sanctuary is just the beginning. Blizzard has officially announced Diablo 5 at BlizzCon 2026, revealing the next mainline entry in its action RPG franchise alongside the series' 30th anniversary celebrations. The game is currently scheduled to launch in 2029.
What Blizzard did reveal paints an especially grim picture for Sanctuary. Diablo 5 takes place a century after the events of Diablo 4, with Mephisto returning following his defeat. This time, however, things have gone considerably worse for the people of Sanctuary.
According to Blizzard's framing of the game, this is the darkest point in Diablo history. Diablo has won, Sanctuary has fallen, and players will have to figure out how to survive in a world that has been thoroughly devastated. That survival-focused premise marks a potentially significant shift for the franchise, although Blizzard has yet to explain exactly what players will be doing when Diablo 5 launches in 2029. The cinematic offered few concrete gameplay details.
Fortunately, Blizzard says more information is on the way. Additional details about the future of the franchise during its upcoming What's Next panel, which will also be available for players to watch via broadcast.
