Final Fantasy has never been particularly shy about revisiting its own history, which is why one of the best Final Fantasy protagonists, Lightning, is relevant in October 2026. Characters, worlds, and ideas from across the franchise have repeatedly found their way into new games, even when their original stories were finished years earlier. It's always creative, too, to see how a game justifies bringing together different heroes into a single roster when they otherwise have little reason to share the same world.
Said approach allows newer Final Fantasy games to reach far beyond their own stories. A character from one numbered entry can suddenly appear alongside heroes from another, creating combinations that would never happen in a traditional Final Fantasy sequel. Sure, having a solo hero return is cool, but seeing the various Final Fantasy protagonists stand together is another story.
