Forty years is a long time for any video game franchise, but Final Fantasy has spent that time constantly reinventing itself. What began with the original journey for the Warriors of Light eventually expanded into dozens of worlds, characters, stories, and settings, with each numbered entry developing its own identity while remaining connected to the larger Final Fantasy legacy. Some of those moments have become just as recognizable for their music as for what was happening on screen.
For many players, Final Fantasy is tied to a particular piece of music or opening sequence. The original "Prelude" dates back to the franchise's earliest days, while "Opening - Bombing Mission" immediately established the atmosphere of Final Fantasy 7 and Midgar. Later games would create their own musical identities, from Eorzea in Final Fantasy 14 to Valisthea in Final Fantasy 16, giving four decades of Final Fantasy history an enormous catalog to draw from.
As a continued celebration of its 25th anniversary, Final Fantasy 10 fans have a new release coming in November 2026.
